Although the program takes place inside a church, Adult Day Care Center of Glendale is not affiliated with it. There is no signage within the well-maintained building, which is reached by walking through the glass double doors and taking the elevators to the second floor. The program is run out of a small room sectioned into two areas, one of which is used exclusively for eating. The dining area contains a refrigerator, microwave, stove and a long wooden table. On the other side of the room, two windows spill sunlight onto the leather couches and armchairs. Walls are decorated with participants' drawings. The room resembles a studio apartment. At the time of our visit the program had ten enrollees, but on most days only about half are present. The small number of participants informs the intimate way staff and participants interact with each other. Furthermore, the staff's attentiveness to participants illustrates the close attachment between the two groups.The program focuses on older adults with early stage dementia or Alzheimer's. Most days at Adult Day Care Center of Glendale start with an exercise routine, followed by arts and crafts projects such as painting, drawing or working with clay. Cognitive activities, like word games and current events discussions, are also on the schedule. The structured activity schedule provides participants with a daily routine that helps orient them and provides a sense of security. Twice a week, if the weather permits, walks and picnics take place in the park a block away. On our tour, one participant with Alzheimer's showed the program director a coloring book he was working on. As he flipped past completed pages, he seemed very happy with his efforts. The program director praised every one of the pictures repeatedly, even though she had already viewed them all numerous times. The participant was aglow with the praise and it was obvious he felt a great sense of accomplishment.
