Directly across the street from Fremont's Washington Hospital and several blocks from Kaiser Hospital, Park Central Care and Rehab is right at home among the neighboring medical facilities and apartment buildings. A small green space at the front of the building holds mature shrubs and towering shade trees. Early visitors may find parking along one side of the building; latecomers can find easy street parking. The interior blends pastel wallpaper with light wood accents. Artificial plants and flowers have been placed throughout the facility. The result is pleasant and homey. Perhaps it is because most residents use wheelchairs that there are few seating areas; nevertheless, the common areas are comfortable—and spacious without the extra furnishings. Park Central's three dining rooms are also used for activities. We were impressed by the variety of the menu, which is unusual for a SNF; not only that, the main entrées and alternatives were posted in large, easy-to-read type! Another common area doubles as a TV room and library. As we passed the therapy room, we noticed a resident moving his feet and legs in time to music. He appeared to be having a good time and smiled good-naturedly when we commented on his "dancing." The moderately sized rooms accommodate two or three residents. Some have large windows, making them particularly bright. One resident busily arranged her possessions in the window of her corner room as we approached the facility. Several rooms access the patio through sliding glass doors. We found the fluorescent lights that brighten the facility a welcome respite from the gloomy afternoon outside! The clean hallways are wide enough to easily accommodate the many residents in wheelchairs. Sturdy handrails run the length of the halls. The staff was friendly, well-informed and responsive to residents' needs. They seem to have a casual rapport with residents and one another. Despite several management changes over the last ten years, the staff has remained constant. The activity bulletin boards colorfully display any upcoming holidays and events. Residents who attend classes and programs earn incentives that they may trade in at the onsite store that they manage. The program appears very successful, as most of the residents we observed were alert and engaged in activities.
