Encino Adult Day Health Care is located off Ventura Boulevard near White Oak inside a strip mall of restaurants and medical offices. The bubble-gum pink building has teal wrought-iron railings and trim. The program is located on the ground floor. A patio bordered by a railing runs the length of the facility. Participants and staff mainly speak Russian to each other—as such, non-Russian speakers may feel slightly ostracized.During our visit, the square tables and chairs outside were full with many participants sitting and enjoying a chat with each other. The main room was also a hub of activity, with participants congregating in groups to chat. The adjacent dining room has long family-style tables with flowered oilcloth coverings; a kitchen is tucked behind the dining room. Other common areas include offices for nursing staff and administration. There is a resting room for participants to lie down should they need a break, and a therapy room for them to strengthen themselves through exercise.As we toured, we noted that participants seemed lively and chatty with one another. Most of the male participants played pool or board games in the activity room or were talking in groups. Women also played board games and sat and talked with each other. Other activities include bingo, singing, dancing and arts and crafts. Outings take place once a month to parks, shopping or restaurants. Both individual and group therapies are offered.
