The Behr family runs Guardian Adult Day Health Center, a nonprofit facility that accommodates adult day health care participants as well as adult day care participants. The no-frills adult day health care program, located on San Pablo Dam Road in El Sobrante, is the only one in West Contra Costa County that offers scholarships to low-income participants. While the scholarship recipients are encouraged to pay $12.00 a day (it is a requirement of the grant that funds the scholarships), the fee is waived for participants who cannot afford it. In addition, participants who lack the financial resources to attend as a participant in the adult day health care may be able to attend the adult day care. Peter Behr informed us that, although these participants are not eligible for nursing or rehabilitation services, there is an RN who attends to any urgent health issues that the participants may experience while at the program. All participants receive individual counseling from a licensed clinical social worker, who visits the center two to three times per week. We observed a large group of participants socializing with one another in the activity area, which features a hodgepodge of comfortable furnishings. A number of individuals sat quietly, while yet another group colored and played dominoes. A supportive staff member supervised participants while the others prepared meals in the kitchen. Activities include exercise, gardening, choir, dancing, games, arts and crafts, and informative lectures on health-related topics. A handful of dividers separate the large main room from the occupational and physical therapy area. The staff nurses have a separate office.
