Nonprofit Guardian Adult Day Health Center is a family-run adult day care program, with a sister adult day health program. The no-frills facility is located on a bustling portion of San Pablo Dam Road in El Sobrante. Somewhat dim lighting illuminates the amply sized main room. We noticed a group of animated adult day care participants socializing in a large group. Others colored and played dominoes or sat quietly. Activities include choir, dancing, gardening, exercise and arts and crafts. A planter adds a touch of green to the outdoor patio. One staff member assisted participants in activities as others prepared meals in the kitchen. The facility boasts a licensed clinical social worker who counsels the participants on an individual basis. Guardian Adult Day Health Center is the only facility in West Contra Costa that offers scholarships to assist low-income participants. Peter Behr, a member of the Behr family that runs the facility, informed us that these participants are encouraged to pay $12.00 per day as it is a requirement of the grant that funds the scholarships. However, the fee is waived if a participant cannot afford it.
