Although located on a busy boulevard, Daily Dreams Adult Day Health Care Center is surrounded by quiet tree-lined streets that are safe for strolling. The petite white building extends a warm welcome with its diminutive patio at the front entrance. Some participants use this area for smoking. The program caters to the Armenian and Russian communities, although all are welcome.Inside, the décor is cozy. Walls are painted to resemble brick. Hanging plants add in a bit of the outdoors. The main activity area is also the dining room; long brown tables are stretched out for use during meals and organized activities such as board or card games. Two pool tables are set up in the corner of the room. The adjacent TV room entices participants to relax in one of two comfortable couches, especially some female participants, who as ardent soap opera fans occasionally spend hours catching up on the latest intrigues. The drama unfolds in Russian. During our tour, most participants were dancing to a live music performance. One of the staffers was playing a keyboard and singing in Armenian. Participants were really involved and happy as they sang along and clapped. Other favorite activities include playing pool and table games. The goal of the program is to maintain and sometimes even enhance participants' current level of socialization and activity involvement. As the facility is quite small, there is a familial quality in how participants and staffers interact; all participants know each other and many maintain friendships outside of the program. Staff members are exceptionally friendly and helpful. A social worker with whom we spoke during our tour related to us that she works very hard to not only make sure that the participants are happy in the program, but that they also have access to community resources.
