Berkeley Adult Day Health Center is located on colorfully named Alcatraz Avenue, in a pink building with numerous windows. The center began serving disabled and elderly individuals in 1990. Participants with a variety of conditions, from middle-aged adults who have suffered a stroke to older adults with Alzheimer's, benefit from the center's services. The facility's staff is exceptionally caring. We overheard a member of the activities staff say, "I'm one of the luckiest people in the world; I enjoy my work every day." Approximately twenty to twenty-five participants attend the center's program each day; this small number allows staff members to tailor activities to participants' preferences and abilities. We observed a discussion group and a game of dominoes taking place in the main room, where exercise, music, arts and crafts, and other activities also occur. Some participants pursued solitary pastimes, but they did not seem neglected thanks to the great number of staff and volunteers. Participants may take naps in a quiet room furnished with two beds. Support groups gather in the conference room, where staff members and participants' families also meet. The facility features an area equipped with rehabilitation equipment, where members of the rehabilitation staff work with participants. Nursing care, counseling, and physical, speech and occupational therapies are all available through the center.
