For well over a decade, ASEB has served Alameda and West Contra Costa Counties by offering adult day health care at its Berkeley and Hayward centers. The centers serve individuals with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. The programming begins with an evaluation of potential participants. Staff members provide transportation to and from the center. The program's small size ensures each participant receives one-on-one attention from the caring staff. Families and caregivers benefit from support groups and education on dementia. The Berkeley day care center is housed on a secured floor of an older multi-story building. The facility's white exterior is dotted with small windows; according to staff members, the limited view prevents participants from becoming distracted. The interior of the facility is a shade of pink that manages to be both stimulating and soothing. An activity room, which staff and participants call "the amphitheatre," is housed in the L-shaped main area. Participants undergo physical and occupational therapy in a separate rehabilitation room. We observed some participants napping comfortably in chairs while others danced to music. Multiple activities often take place simultaneously, allowing participants a selection of gardening, art, cooking, and reminiscence. Participants enjoy a nutritious breakfast, lunch and snacks daily.
