The Bedford Center is located in the quiet community of Antioch. The stately building features a brick frame and peaked rooftops. Mature trees surround the premises. The interior is a busy hodgepodge of tables, chairs and lounge seating; an abundance of art supplies and activity equipment rests against one wall. Cascading sunlight combined with soft artificial lighting and a cool pastel color scheme impart a sense of calm to the otherwise bustling environment. Outside, a spacious courtyard is spotted with shady trees. Participants enjoy outdoor activities during the summer months. Management and staff organize a wide range of physically and mentally stimulating activities. The more active participants play basketball and table tennis; others enjoy the cognitive play of word games and puzzles, arts and crafts and bingo. Local musicians visit the day care regularly, entertaining participants with live performances. We observed a vibrant group singing and dancing around the visiting guitarist. The energy was infectious! Participants and staff smiled and laughed throughout the performance—and we joined right in.
