Visitors enter the ranch-style building that houses Alameda Care Center through a beautiful entry graced with glass doors and expansive windows. A colorful collection of signs, activity boards and photographs bring cheer to the somewhat institutional interior. The spacious lobby hosted a competitive game of mah-jongg between four residents at the time of our visit. Another small group socialized while others quietly relaxed on contemporary furnishings near the grand piano. Birds twittered in a cage. Residents employed other common areas as they exercised, enjoyed arts and crafts, and attended to their religious devotions. Fluorescent lighting in the hallways illuminates seating areas, appealing photographs and wall hangings. The sunny facility is divided into four skilled nursing areas, each of which features large dining and activity rooms. Each dining room serves a specific group; for example, one room hosts residents who do not require any feeding assistance. Natural light pervades residents' moderately sized rooms, where sliding glass doors access the landscaped outdoor area. Residents' personalities surface through their choice of knickknacks, furnishings and window treatments. Rooms are assigned to residents based on the level of assistance they require. A special area is designated for residents who require IVs, ventilators and wound care, but do not need to be hospitalized. Alameda Care Center's owner took time from his busy day to talk to us about his interest in nursing administration. We also chatted at length with a resident of two months. She praised the caring and accommodating staff and then told us a story. One night she heard a neighbor, who was clearly distressed, calling out. An aide immediately arrived and began coaxing the resident back to bed in a soothing voice. The reassured neighbor quieted down and went back to sleep. The resident also informed us that for several days she did not feel like eating and requested a diet of liquid nourishment, which the staff accommodated, rather than trying to convince her to eat regular meals. As we departed, mellow sunlight illuminated the well-maintained landscaping in the front yard. Flowers popped with color beside verdant bushes. The home features a large shady courtyard furnished with tables and chairs, where staff members escort residents to savor the fresh air. Residents enjoy access to classes at the Alameda Adult School and look forward to competing for various awards in the Alameda County Fair.
