myHalo is the Guardian Angel Monitoring System for Seniors

INSIDER TIP: Caregivers, get some peace of mind with a new and innovative monitoring system.

As we walked through the whirlwind that was the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, we were stopped in our tracks when we came across the innovative Halo Monitoring system, dubbed myHalo. Users wear a chest strap so that their caregivers are kept aware of their:

  • vital signs, including pulse rate and temperature
  • sleep patterns
  • activity levels, such as how much they are moving about
  • or if they fall

The revolutionary new addition to the world of senior care and monitoring provides a high level of coordinated care. Caregivers can access this information via a secured Web site while alerts can be sent by text message, email or telephone call from the company’s round-the-clock call center. Adult children can always be kept in the loop about not only whether mom is safe at home, but also if she if she is running a slight fever, has a regular heart beat, has slept enough in the past few days or perhaps isn’t picking up her phone because she decided to take a nap. The device truly can cut down on an adult child’s worry about a parent living alone. The strap also features a panic button. If the panic button is pressed then the call center will contact the care recipient. If they do not respond, then emergency services are contacted immediately. The only downside we saw is that getting a loved one to wear the strap could take a bit of coaxing. myHalo charges both an initial set-up and monthly fees.

Refresher: myHalo is a technological advance on medical alert buttons and allow real-time updates on a loved one’s vital signs, sleep patterns, activity levels and provide an immediate contact of emergency services in the event of a fall.

New Web site Launched for LGBT Seniors

The American Society of Aging has just launched a new site devoted to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender seniors—the LGBT Aging Resources Clearinghouse. The Web site makes it a snap for anyone to find service providers, community and professional organizations, information sites, reports and articles, as well as links for ordering DVDs, books and other helpful products. The video clips on the site are courtesy of the documentary Ten More Good Years, a engaging film that investigates the process and outcome of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging (WHCoA) which occurs every ten years alongside interviews with professionals and advocates of the LGBT and senior communities.
