what are the food sources of probiotics?
Bernie,
Thank you for asking this important question. The primary sources of probiotics are fermented foods. However, most of our fermented foods are pasteurized, canned or processed in order to kill bacteria. Yogurt is one of our best sources of healthy flora. Look for yogurt which specifically says it contains “live cultures.†Some food companies are actively promoting their yogurt products as sources of healthy bacteria. Other dairy products such as crème fraîche, sour cream, and kefir also contain these flora. Dairy products, however, can be allergenic and problematic for many people. An alternative to these dairy products is Kombucha, a fermented tea drink.
i've been hearing a ton about probiotics, but never really understood about their purpose. I'm not a huge yogurt fan and don't think i'll be eating a bowl of sour cream anytime soon so it sounds like I'll have to get supplements. thanks for the info - i'm off to Whole Foods.
