I'd appreciate any suggestions for keeping blood sugars lower after a bi-lateral adrenalectomy. Since having to take Hydrocortisone to stay alive increases my blood sugars - and I now have Type 2 - what am I to do?! HELP! Thank you.
I am so sorry to hear you are having trouble. Things get a little tricky when the body relies on hormones from medications, especially medications in the cortisone family of hormones. With that said, the advice is the same, except you must be even more diligent. I assume you are working with an endocrinologist who is helping you to manage your dose of hydrocortisone well. Given that assumption, anything you can do to reduce simple carbohydrates in your diet, minimize stress, reduce inflammation, and nourish your insulin response will definitely help.(Please read my postings on inflammation and probiotics.) Also, antioxidants such as Alpha Lipoic Acid will limit damage from high blood sugar levels.
Take care,

Thank you so much for this column...it is very very informative. My sugar has been surging...I have alot of food allergies and inflammation and saw here that I could be eating things I thought were "innocent" and it could be surging the sugar levels..I am taking a product called Gluco-reg...previously it did the job, I have been very stressed with pain over my kidneys...my PCP is supposed to do a rast blood test for food allergies...some I already know and then to see if I have Cushing disease...Thank you..this is a start..Annamarie
Annamarie,
Thank you for your comments. I am glad my column is useful! I agree…It sounds like you may be eating some foods which adversely affect your blood sugar levels. The RAST testing can be very helpful, but also consider doing an elimination diet. Please read my posting regarding probiotics.I think they will be very helpful in calming your inflammation. I wish you the best.
I eat a lot of peanuts and I have been diagonised with type 2 diabetes. Can a reduction in this carving help?
I also have an egg a day!
Phillip,
Thank you for your question. Peanuts are inflammatory for a lot of people. If they are for you, they could raise your blood glucose levels. You could avoid them for a while and see how your blood sugar responds. It sounds like you are enjoying your daily egg. Keep up the good work.
hi, i have been a diabetic for 10 years and for the past 1 year it is not under control. I have developed purpura type rashes on both legs near the ankle which seems to spread. Is there any remedy???
Excellent I appreciate that you made people aware of the cortisol from the Adrenals. Being a diabetic is stressful so people need to know you can get into a cycle and not figure out why your blood sugar are high when you are compliant with your diet. So thank you for that . I am not a diabetic but in the health care field for 40 yrs
Thanks
God bless you, I have been looking for natural ways to control my blood sugar, I want something to work with my pancreas and liver so they can do their job and get my blood sugar under control.
I read on the herbs you recommend and I am going to try them. The blood test that is done every three months to determine you level was 7.5 compared to 6 when I was diagnoised and I have been worried. Thank you for your article, it was truly a God send, May God richly bless you.
Please help! I have been a type two diabetic for about 14 years now not because of weight, but genetics. I have ALWAYS been able to keep it maintained with diet, medication and exercise. My old Dr. moved andonce I saw the new one, my sugars had significantly risen, and he immediately changed both my blood pressure meeds as well as added Actos to my meds! He said my sugars would get back into the normal range with the Actos. First they did. Now they are higher than ever!! I have decided he has totally messed up my body and plan! I am a vegetarian, but I get plenty of protein. I was originally taought by my dietician to count my carbs, and that worked. He says forget that! He says the supplements I use to take do nothing and wants to add Glucotrol to my meds. He says I will NEVER be able to reduse my meds that sooner or later I will be looking at insulin! Please help!! I am so afraid of what all of this mess has done to my body. When I test, even if I haven't eaten, I run over 200!! This expensive Actos obviously is not doing all he said! I need to find a way to get back on track. Please reply. Thanks you.
Debbie,
I encourage you to find a doctor with whom you can have a good working relationship. Managing diabetes is a lifelong effort, and you need a doctor you can talk to comfortably about what works for you. If counting carbs was effective in the past, then I strongly encourage you to do it. And, I agree… it sounds as if the meds are not working as well as they should be. As far as controlling blood glucose is concerned, you could consider the herb Gymnema sylvestre. It is helpful in lowering blood sugar for most people. Also, realize stress and inflammation make blood sugar increase, and you should do everything you can to reduce them. (Please read my article about Inflammation.) Since your diabetes is less controlled at the moment, this is a crucial time to protect your cardiovascular and nervous systems with supplements (such as alpha lipoic acid, which, in my opinion, is a crucial supplement for all diabetics.) I really hope this helps and wish you the best.
