The healthy omega 3 fatty acids found in fish and fish oils may also help you lose weight and burn body fat more effeciently....
Researchers at the University of Iceland found that adding fish or fish oils to your diet can help you lose more weight.
A total of 324 overweight men and woman aged 20 - 40 years were placed on a 1600 kcal/day diet.
Volunteers were randomly assigned to one of four diets: No seafood diet, lean fish (150 g. of cod 3 times/week), fatty fish (150 g. of salmon 3 times/week) or fish oil supplements without seafood.
After 4 weeks, the researchers found volunteers eating fish or fish oils lost approximately 1 kg. more weight than those on a similar diet without seafood or fish oil supplements.
Researchers concluded that you can use fish or fish oil for weight loss when it's used with a a nutritionally balanced, calorie-restricted diet.
Further studies by researchers in the Czech Republic discovered that omega 3 fatty acids helped overweight women burn fat faster and reduced they're tendency to store fat.
20 severly obese women were randomly assigned to a very low calorie diet with omega 3 fatty acids or placebo for 3 weeks.
The women getting omega 3 fatty acids experienced higher weight loss than the placebo group. Their hips also got slimmer due to a decrease in their hip circumference.
Supplementing with omega 3 fatty acids also caused a higher rate of fat burning and decreased the amount of blood sugar converted into fat.
Researchers concluded that omega 3 fatty acids enhance weight loss in obese females treated with a very low calorie diet.
