I work in a nursing home and it saddens me to see so many people who can barely walk from their rooms to the dining room. I watch over what they eat because it’s just like our mom’s told us growing up: you are what you eat.
I’m glad to hear that you monitor your residents’ intake. I know first hand how sad it is to watch someone denying their bodies. Considering the potential for illness and weakness in old age, it is integral we watch our caloric intake as we get older. Many people don’t realize that calories are actually energy, something many of us wish we had more of. Eating well is certainly a great start.
Good piece, Lori. We are constantly being made aware of the problems of obesity. The idea of malnutrition in older people needs disemination. Thanks.
