I have helped lots of friends get rid of stuff. I use a mix of feng shui and decluttering methods. Everyone always feels so liberated afterward!
so glad you point out that it is hard for you to even do the downsizing bit. makes me feel better about how hard its been for me.
I write a blog called Senior Life Style. In addition to talking about travel, recreation (golfing) and personal choices of where and how to live, I try to point retiree in the direction of "right sizing". It seems to me that if we make some sound decisions when we are younger and with the right attitude, some of those harder moves will seem much easier.
I have, for example, found that living in a senior resort for a few month of the year paves the way for a time when we are forced to in assisted living facilities surrounded my only age mates. We have a small, inexpensive park model in Tucson in just such a place. We have found that we love it.
We have "right sized" here in Oregon too. We moved from a 4 bedroom home to a condo with 2 bedrooms and a den. It has been hard to let go of all our possessions. We have lived here 7 years and just last year took all that extra stuff to Goodwill. What a relief it was. But the thing is we keep our minds open. We may move again and that is exciting...even if it means "right sizing" one more time.
Thank you for the tip on the book. You are doing a wonderful thing for older people.
