Do I understand you correctly that, because I have frequent episodes of severe cold sores, I am more likely to have dementia at some point in my life??

  2. Lara Belonogoff Says:

Well, these researchers have just found that there is a link between ApoE genes and herpes. So how these two factors interact is still not known in its entirety, because there are other reasons for frequent cold sores which could not be associated with ApoE genes. What is known is that if a person has the ApoE-4 gene then he/she is more likely to develop Alzheimer’s—and that if this same person also has herpes his/her outbreaks will be more frequent. What isn’t known is the intricacies of this interaction and specifically whether the situation works in reverse also (e.g., if frequent cold sore outbreaks are indicative of a higher rate of dementia).

  3. Dirty Butter Says:

My mother was bothered with terrible cold sores. She had dementia for many years, sometimes diagnosed as Alzheimer's and sometimes as Parkinson's Dementia.

I, too, have huge outbreaks of cold sores. I have been diagnosed with Parkinson's. My cognitive abilities show signs of diminishing.

I'll be watching this research, and please post if you find more about it.
