Natural Treatment for Arthritis Pain

Arthritis comes from the Greek, meaning inflammation of the joints. Some forty to fifty million people suffer from osteoarthritis, which affects weight-bearing joints and is linked to aging, and rheumatoid arthritis, the most common inflammatory form. No matter the type of arthritis, the effect is similar: the cartilage in our joints stops functioning as a simple cushion, resulting in pain which can sometimes be quite significant.

Some of the many remedies for arthritis include drugs, acupuncture and following an anti-inflammatory diet. Now a new study points to another natural treatment which can be used in tandem with these remedies to soothe arthritis pain: the application of heated mud packs to the afflicted areas. The study found that direct application of the mud to the skin overlying the joint provided the best results. The mud was heated to forty-three degrees centigrade and applied fifteen times for about thirty minutes to each affected joint. The study found a significant decrease in pain intensity as well as a decrease in pain medication consumption.
