this is great information. We had problems when my dad moved into the nursing home with possible abuse. We lived out of the state but tried to visit almost every weekend. I think that I wish I could have spent more time researching the facility. ANd while I can't say that there was definite abuse, I do think there was neglect. Makes my blood boil too when I think about it. He wasn't in the home for long, but I've spent time thinking about it recently and wish we moved him to a facility closer to us.

People in nursing homes need advocates for their well-being and it's almost impossible for someone to be thre 24/7 to look out for them.

If I ever have to place someone in a home in my life again, I will definitely take a more proactive approach. Your points are well-taken - especially researching the employee hiring procedures, training, spending time at the facility ahead of time, and really becoming comfortable with the caregivers.

We've never ended up putting any of our parents in a nursing home, but I've done lots of research and visiting each time it looked like we might have to do it.

I always go to the site, and also the National Watch List to help me eliminate poorly run homes and get more information about the good ones close to us.
